Heads of Health in the Pacific meet April 2017

25th July 2017
Georgia Heighway

As Secretariat of the South Pacific Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officers Alliance, the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre at University of Sydney Technology had the opportunity to present on behalf of the Alliance at the Fifth Heads of Health meeting held in Fiji in 2017.

The Heads of Health meeting organised by SPC (Pacific Community) brings together Health Ministers from across the Pacific to discuss issues of importance for health care in their countries and the region.

One key resolution from the Heads of Health meeting was that the South Pacific Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officers Alliance would be represented in all future regional Heads of Health meetings. This would occur through their attendance at the Director of Clinical Services meetings, where SPCNMOA plan to represent issues and strategies of nursing and midwifery - the largest health workforce. It was also recommended that training providers strengthen the provision of specialised nursing through curriculum reviews across the region; and that countries provide clinical nursing career pathways.
